About
Outram School is a full primary school, with nine full-time and five part-time teachers including a non-teaching principal. Ancillary staff include the school administration officer, librarian, assistant librarian, events manager, teachers aides, cleaner and caretaker. The school roll varies between 220 and 250.
Our school has a strong VISION for learning and this is the thing that drives all that we do.
The catchment area for the school extends beyond the town boundaries into the surrounding rural area. We have an Enrolment Scheme and children have to live within our ‘home zone’ to be eligible to attend Outram School. Private contractors operate school buses and some rural parents transport their children to school by car each day.
The vast majority of children are classified as NZ European.
The main portions of school parents are working people with a small number of single and unemployed parents. A number of parents work outside the environs of the school area.
The school buildings comprise ten classrooms, a teacher resource area, hall and workshop, library, and covered pool. In February 2003 our new arts and information centre (Allen Centre) was completed. This centre houses our growing collection of library books, which currently totals approximately 9000. State-of-the-art audiovisual equipment is included in the centre. A fully equipped stage area complete with stage curtains and lighting complete the presentation area of this facility.
Also on site is a dental clinic and heated swimming pool. The Outram Playcentre is situated in a corner of the school grounds.
The grounds are spacious and attractively laid out and present an idyllic rural setting for our students, staff and school visitors. There is a generous amount of grass playing fields and hardcourt areas.
In August 2005 a significant new multi-purpose (The Workshop) facility was opened. It comprises a large hall catering for assemblies, physical education, the performing arts and the junior perceptual motor programme. Adjoining the hall is a large facility catering for hands-on activities including science, technology and art and craft. This area leads to a horticulture area complete with garden plots and tunnel house.
We have a high level of technology in all classrooms, with at least two high spec networked desktop computers; and access to shared wireless laptops, digital still and video cameras. Children are increasingly skilled in using information and communication technologies to support and share their learning.
